This brightened up our day!

It's been raining so heavily here in Byron Bay lately... but this brightened up my day. We're very chuffed to see The Noosa Journal has chosen a bunch of Mellimoomoo's finest products to feature in their Weekender magazine. Look closely and you'll see our wonderful Barefoot witchety grub(one of our most popular toys, by the way), a Bajo racing car, Meemoh hand-made babooshka and bunny and of course our wonderful Small One eco-furniture set. Don't they all look fabulous!!

Mellimoomoo supports originality and ethics in design
Mellimoomoo wholeheartedly supports ethical manufacturing of children's products. In fact, it is our passion to promote the work of those working towards a more ethical production model for children's products. Our ethical concerns cover the environmental impact of making the toys and sourcing materials, the treatment of workers, the safety of the toys AND ethical design.
WE DO NOT support manufacturers copying the original work of talented artists and designers and "passing off" the work as their own without the original designer's permission.

We've been blogged!

Our lovely little babooshka dolls from Byron Bay designers, Meemoh, are creating quite a stir! These cuddly baby toys made an appearance last week on the brilliant Australian blog site www.babyology.com.au. The review was wonderful and we were thrilled to see these hand-made beauties get the attention they deserve. Our very first online product review! If you haven't visited this blog site I highly recommend it - they have a knack of finding amazing products from around the globe.

Mellimoomoo launches children's eco-furniture range

For some time now we have been searching for children's furniture to add to the mellimoomoo range that is made ethically from sustainable materials, had excellent design qualities and was lightweight enough for us to ship without too much cost to customers. And... we are delighted to say we've found it!! This week we are very proud to announce the launch of Small One tables and chairs.
Hand-made in Australia from sustainably harvested timber and finished in a delicious blend of food safe natural oils (the oil used on this furniture happens to be from Organoil, an environmentally freindly company from our neck of the woods, Byron Bay!) this is furniture built to last, and designed for fun!
With their organic curves and animal-like shapes, I'm sure you will agree Small One is children's furniture that you will not want to hide away!!
To find out more about Small One, visit our nursery and bedroom category here.

We love this keepsake idea!

I love hearing from parents with great ideas like this one.
Anneliese is a mum in South Carolina who happens to be part of a large "extended family" connected through her husband's helicopter squadron. Whenever one of the couples from the squadron has a new baby - Anneliese creates a beautiful keepsake for them by hand-painting the baby's name and date of birth and the squadron's name onto a little toy - and she has stocked up on our wonderful Bajo wooden helicopters to get through the next batch of new squadron arrivals.
Annelise described her first painted chopper as "nothing special" - but I have to disagree!! What a beautiful way to celebrate a birth and remember the squadron by. Well done Anneliese! And welcome to the world little Diamond Lee!

Help for parents searching for healthy toys
I have come across a fantastic website that has been set up to help parents make healthy choices when choosing toys for children. The site: www.healthytoys.org has an extensive list of toys that have been tested for harmful chemicals and toxic heavy metals. Some of the results will shock you. Some of the toxic chemicals they found in children's products include: lead, arsenic, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and cadmium.
So far they have tested 1,200 toys and they are continuing their project. The research is scientifically thorough and clear explanations are included describing the harm these particular chemicals can cause to growing bodies.
The site is compiled by researchers at the not-for-profit Ecology Center based in Michigan, US. (*worth visitng their website too for some great sustainable living ideas)
As well as the findings, the site has an action plan encouraging parents to lobby governments into increasing toy safety regulations to include chemical safety. Mellimoomoo fully supports this idea and I hope 2008 sees some action on this front in Australia. Our children deserve to be safe and toy manufacturers, and retailers (and I include mellimoomoo here), must be transparent and accountable for the products they sell.
I would be very interested to hear back from parents who visit this site.

New Year fresh start
I love New Year! New Year equals hope and a fresh start.
For me this New Year has a special joy to it as the first anniversary of giving birth to my daughter Melody on January 6, 2006. Christmas and New Year are now entwined with glorious memories of being fully pregnant, eagerly anticipating her arrival, and the beautiful homebirth itself. Now we are gearing up for her first birthday - and every day we marvel at how much she has grown, so, so quickly.
New Year is also a perfect time to take stock – both internally looking back on what I achieved over the past year- and this New Year’s day involved a physical stock take. Boxes were unpacked and re-packed and toys counted and noted as I got myself up-to-date with stock levels after the busy Christmas season.
The fruits of my New Year “stocktake/clean-up” will become apparent over the next week as I start adding some new products and a few sale items to the site. Stay tuned… and Happy New Year!
Here are the first "New Year" toys I have added:

These lovely wooden rattles are from our German toymakers - Hess Spielzeug. Perfect for young hands to grip and safe and non-toxic as well. I particularly love how simple these classic designs are.

new arrival of natural wooden toys at mellimoomoo
After my spray last week about another dangerous toy being out there in the Australian market place I promised I would come back with some good news in the next blog. Well, here I am delivering!

I'm so thrilled to be able to offer to mellimoomoo customers these all-natural wooden toys (pictured above) from my favourite designer - Bajo. I ordered these natural planes and racing cars especially to complement mellimoomoo's growing range of non-toxic toys, and as soon as I opened the box I knew they'd be a hit! Don't get me wrong - I LOVE Bajo's coloured toys too, but I am really fond of naturally finished wooden toys. And Bajo fits all of my ethical requirements - ethically and fairly made, certified sustainable forestry practices, non-toxic finishes, strict safety certification... but best of all they are simply beautiful designs.
I'm a firm believer in bringing aesthetically pleasing toys to children. Children are such sensory beings - they appreciate natural beauty and these Bajo toys are perfect. The designs are the best I've seen in wooden toys and the toys have been made to feel so good to touch- everything is rounded, smooth and just the right size and shape for small hands. Even if you have never given wooden toys a go before - give these toys a whirl. You will be 100% satisfied. Kids adore them and for parents the cost won't break the bank - and could even save you money in the long run because they are so strong and sturdy, you won't be having to fork out more $ on replacing broken toys (the same can't be said for plastic toys generally).
Ok, that's enough gushing about Bajo... again!
Can I also thank everyone who has sent back their positive feedback to me recently. It's so rewarding to know that mellimoomoo products are out there being loved and played with - and that everyone has been so happy with their purchases. Every product you see on mellimoomoo has been personally selected by me - and every company has been carefully examined and analysed to determine their ethics before I buy from them. It's a long process - believe me - and many suppliers are rejected because their products just don't make the grade. So, after being so careful, it's so good to hear from customers that you appreciate that effort... Thanks.
One last mention - I can't help myself... I'm fanatical about toy safety. Please visit our resources pages as and take a quick look through the product recall links. In the past week there have been more toys recalled because of lead paint and more Fisher-Price toys recalled beacuse of dangerous choking hazards. It only takes a minute or two to read these lists, but they could save your child's, or a friend or family member's, life.

parents need to know about another highly dangerous toy recall...
We have been absolutely horrified to hear in the media today of yet another dangerous toy that has poisoned young children. Following on from the massive recalls of Chinese-made toys containing lead paint, two Australian children have been hospitalised after eating the beads from the Chinese-made Bindeez toy. It is believed the beads from this toy contain toxins which are metabolised by the body into the toxic illegal drug GHB (fantasy). If ingested these beads have the potential to induce seizures, drowsiness and comas... This is a potentially life-threatening situation.
While these little plastic toys are not something you would ever find at mellimoomoo - they are very popular, even winning a Toy of the Year Award at the Melbourne Toy Fair. I understand these toys were available from Target stores mainly. If you have purchased these toys - take them out of reach of your child immediately and remove them from your home. The Bindeez toys have been recalled across Australia and the Office of Fair Trading is investigating.
It angers me to think how many more children must be hurt before toy safety becomes a strictly controlled issue in this country... I for one would support tighter national legislation to protect our kids from toxic toys. Even when I was looking up this issue on the web tonight there are still online sellers who still have the Bindeez products available for sale. How dare people make a profit out of a product that could injure a child.
I hope the following media links with information on the Bindeez recall may be of assitance to parents:
news.com.au news article, ABC news article, The Age news article
And I hope I can bring some happier news to you in my next blog entry...

mellimoomoo in the news again...

Another huge week for the mellimoomoo team, we've had a shipment of beautiful new toys arrive. Keep watching this space because we have some exciting new products to reveal ...
Our other big news this week is that we were in the news - again! This time a lovely write-up in our local press, the Byron Shire News. Thanks so much to the editor Gary Chigwidden for featuring a story about us! (click on our media page to read the full story) Of course Melody is really the star of the story - she's pictured happily sucking away on a Hess-Speilzeug beading loop Ralf toy - her current favourite! I love that they described me as being on a quest - sounds exciting doesn't it? Right now I'm about to embark on another important quest as "melody's mum"... to the dark and dangerous realm of the change table... Yep, definitely an adventurous life!

bunnies and busy days...
Well, it's been a busy week for the mellimoomoo team. Melody has grown a new tooth while her big sister turned 11 and Dad turned another year older too! Lots to celebrate - and beautiful weather here in Byron Bay to help with the celebrations. For Ella's birthday we, and a gaggle of her girlfriends, had a fantastic time down at the picnic grounds at The Pass, a lovely part of Byron Bay right next to the ocean and surrounded in bushland with walking tracks that can take you up the Byron Bay lighthouse. Fruit by the truckload, water bombs, ocean-dips and a pinjata kept the kids happy all day. We headed off to the beach again for picnic to celebrate Alex's birthday, slightly more low-key and not a pinjata in sight, but still lovely to have some family time together.
So with all of that going on I haven't had a chance to introduce two new little friends that have come to visit at mellimoomoo. Here they are, two zany bunnies from the wonderfully zany Byron Bay designers, Meemoh.

How cute are they? Meemoh toys are designed by three Byron Bay mothers who all have a great sense of fun. I came across the toys earlier this year and loved the designs and fabrics they use. I couldn't wait to get them into mellimoomoo. They are made to be safe for babies to play with - all facial features embroidered on. But these toys have a wider age appeal than just babies. If you are lucky enough to nab one of these toys (they are all hand-made in very limited runs, so be quick) you will find it will still be a favourite in years to come. There will be more Meemoh friends coming to visit mellimoomoo soon! To read more about Meemoh visit our designers.

ethical considerations
Ethical considerations were the inspiration behind mellimoomoo and I know there are many parents out there who have the same concerns as I do about choosing ethical products for their families. I am adding more ethical links to my resources pages and today have added an article by journalist Graham Readfearn that many will find interesting. Here is an excerpt:
MY WASHING machine had to go and, according to the book, so did my car, my favourite breakfast cereal and most of the contents of the bathroom cupboard. This was the beginning of my attempt to become a purely ethical consumer and it was not a good start. Read more...

A special offer... because Bajo is special...

Judging by the response to our beautiful Bajo wooden toys - all made in Poland - I am not the only parent out there who appreciates finely crafted European toys. It's no surprise really; not only are these non-toxic toys safe for children to chew and suck on, they are so strong and durable and have also been created from renewable timber sources. We gave our daughter Melody (pictured) a Bajo rattlefish several months ago, and it is still her favourite and still standing up to the absolute beatings she dishes out to her toys!
So, if you would like to see for yourself how gorgeous Bajo toys are, read on... We have decided to offer mellimoomoo customers a special deal on these cute little Bajo helicopters - only while stocks last. The rrp is $26.95 - but for a limited time you can purchase one of these choppers for the special pric of $19.95. That's a great deal on a quality European toy. Enjoy!

More non-toxic European wooden toys arrive at mellimoomoo...

Great news for parents looking for a safe, natural alternative to plastic toys - we have new stock arriving daily of high-quality European wooden toys.
Today we introduce the first of our new toys from renowned German toy makers, Hess Spielzeug. This family-owned company is committed to producing safe baby toys with non-toxic colours and finishes and all toys are safety tested to the strictest European standards.
The same level of quality and safety applies to our wonderful range of Bajo wooden toys, made in Poland and tested to strict German toy safety standards - including, of course, all paints, varnishes and glues being absolutely 100% safe for your child. Keep your eyes on the what's new section - because there will be new Bajo toys arriving soon too. (We love Bajo!!)
With the recent recalls of hundreds of thousands of toxic toys from China, painted with dangerous levels of lead paint, it's reassuring to know there are toy makers out there who really do care about the children who ultimately end up playing with their toys. Wish more of them cared so much...

celebrations and congratulations!
I find myself using smiley faces in just about every email I send these days and I'm having to consciously stop myself from overdoing it. But I'm just so happy I can't help myself! We have had such a great response (almost overwhelming) since the website was launched, it makes all of those months of behind-the-scenes research and work all worth it.
So, to those of you who have sent their congratulations and I haven't personally got back to you yet - thank you thank you.
However, today I would like to congratulate someone else: Jannine Barron from Nature's Child in Byron Bay.

Nature's Child won both Gold and Bronze awards for their products at the recent Organic Expo in Melbourne. The gold medal was for most innovative organic product for their organic cotton Muslin wrap and they also received a bronze for most innovative organic product for their organic cotton nappies.Well done Jannine and team!
When I was deciding on which organic baby products to feature in mellimoomoo there was no question in my mind that I would choose Nature's Child organics. Not only are they are the highest quality on the market, it is lovely to be able to support an ethical business based in my local area, Byron Bay.
Jannine and I first met many years ago when we were both pregnant with our first children and I have watched in admiration over the years since as Nature's Child grew from a small mail-order business operating from a spare room in Jannine's home to an internationally renowned organic baby product manufacturing success. As Jannine puts it: “ I had a great idea, no funds, but a lot of passion”.
Well - the passion paid off: Seven years after starting, Nature's Child is now the leading organic baby supplier in Australia and employs 12 Byron locals. And, at every stage Jannine has maintained her ethics and conviction that an organic future is one that our children deserve.
You can view Nature's Child products here.

mellimoomoo makes headlines

Wow! The media is already talking about mellimoomoo and our ethical products. Mellimoomoo is featured in today's Brisbane Courier Mail (Queensland's largest circulation daily newspaper).
Journalist Graham Readfearn's article titled: GREEN NURSERY is about how parents can make "green" choices for their babies. It's a well written feature and we're thrilled to be included! I will post more of Graham's articles in our resources section - he is a journalist writing about issues close to my heart - ethics, organics, non-toxic toys etc.
Here's the text version of the Brisbane Courier Mail article:

BABIES might be little bundles of joy but they are anything but innocent when it comes to their impact on the world's environment.
There's all that packaging from gifts and toys, all those fabrics from clothes and bedding and all that water from bathing and washing to think about.
Then, there's the added electricity from running washing machines and airconditioners and the extra car trips that all damage the atmosphere and use the Earth's dwindling natural resources.
But there is an increasing number of options available to make sure the next generation starts off by minimising their impact on the environment, rather than following in their parents' rather clumsy and carbon-heavy footprints.
Dr Kate O'Brien, a mother of two, says when it comes to considering the planet, some parents can become distracted by issues such as buying organic food or using the right sort of nappy and then forget the more fundamental problems.
"If you are spending time worrying about buying wooden or plastic toys, then you are probably skirting around the issue," says O'Brien, a lecturer in environmental engineering at The University of Queensland.
"Getting a solar hot water system, a water efficient washing machine, starting a compost bin and driving a smaller car are more important than whether you choose wooden or plastic toys."
Few debates have prompted quite so much moral soul searching among parents than the one which pitches the disposable nappy against reusables.
O'Brien has carried out an analysis of the life-cycle of both types of nappy system to look at their overall impact on the environment. But unlike other studies, O'Brien's research was carried out with Australian conditions in mind.
As her study is yet to be published, she understandably refuses to reveal her findings, but says there are a number of facts which are now uncontested among respected scientists. Cloth nappies are cheaper but they generally use more water. Disposable nappies contribute to landfill and use more energy overall than cloth nappies that are washed in cold water and then line dried.
"Really, our focus should not only be on the type of nappy we use, but on water, chemicals, landfill and energy. If you want to make sure your children can swim on the beach or fish in the rivers like we did when we were children, then you need to be thinking about three things – saving energy, using less water and reducing waste."
In a survey by the New South Wales Government last year, 87 per cent of people said they were worried about environmental problems, with the most popular concern being for future generations.
Author, environmental campaigner and mother-of-two Tanya Ha says more parents are becoming aware of the impact children can have on the environment. "I'm encouraged by the amount of recycling and swapping that goes on between parents. But the baby industry has been made much more consumerist than it needs to be. Babies don't recognise designer labels but there are more label-conscious mothers."
Industry analysts IBISWorld estimates that this year Australians will spend about $1.5 billion on baby-related products.
Ha's new book, The Australian Green Consumer Guide, devotes a chapter to baby products where she points out how the latest status symbol gift is the Tiffany's silver dumbbell rattle, costing about $420.
For about $60 a year less than the price of a Tiffany dumbbell, electricity retailer AGL says an average household can pay to have all its energy from sustainable resources such as wind, solar or biomass.
Megan Kinninment, from Byron Bay, has just launched a new business - http:/www.mellimoomoo.com.au– which sells ethically produced and environmentally friendly baby products. Kinninment, who has a daughter aged 10 and a nine-month-old boy, says she will only sell products from companies which pledge to treat workers fairly, don't support child labour and confirm they don't use toxic materials. She adds her online store is a "plastic-free zone".
"I try to live in an environmentally and socially responsible way generally, so when it came to setting up for my new baby I applied the same principles.
"While it was relatively easy to make certain green choices, such as cloth nappies and organic baby food for example, I was surprised at how few stores sold ethically produced baby and children's toys," she says.
Her ranges include comforters and toys made from organic cotton and wooden toys produced under fair trade agreements.
But she says she struggles with the fact her goods are imported from places including Germany, Egypt and Bolivia, using energy and resources to get them to Australia.
"If I could source the products from Australia, I would, but we are just not producing them," she adds. "The environment is a growing concern for parents but it's not at the top of their minds. Parents who come and see my market stall don't ask if the toy has been made from sustainable timbers. The price and safety is still number one."
Dr Kate O'Brien adds: "These children may wonder why we wasted so many of our resources and failed to look after the environment properly.
"They'll be amazed that we burnt coal just so they could have a hot shower, they'll wonder why we kept buying so many new clothes for them and why we used bleach to wash the floor."

off to market we go

This pic was taken at Lennox Head markets last weekend. Isn't Lake Ainsworth beautiful in the background?
We take a selection of mellimoomoo products to our local markets each weekend - this Sunday (Oct 7) we'll be at Byron Bay markets. Come along and visit if you're in town. The Byron markets are a unique experience - there's nothing quite like it anywhere else in Australia. (the closest I've come across is perhaps the Mindil night markets in Darwin)
Alex and I love meeting other parents at the markets. Every week we've been hearing such positive feedback about the toys and gifts we sell at mellimoomoo. Thanks everyone!
I especially love watching the kid's faces as they clutch onto their new toy - so gorgeous. And aren't kids so straight-up about what they like or don't like? There was one little girl last weekend who, when asked which toy she wanted, insisted on every colour Bajo steamroller we had on display. Kids know a good toy when they come across it don't they!
