Why have children’s furniture you want to hide?
That is the question that motivated Sydney-based artist Chris Byrne to design his beautiful Small One range of children’s furniture.
The Left Hand Make crew (yes, Chris is left handed) include wife Amanda and wee daughter Ava to road test designs.
Hand-made from stunning Scandinavian Birch with Australian hardwood features, Small One chairs and tables are children’s furniture that complement the modern home – without a hint of boring pine or mdf.
Making heirloom-quality furniture is a passion that runs in the Byrne family.
“I’ve got a chair my uncle made me when I was about four out of driftwood from the beach on the western isles of Scotland,” explains Chris.
“It’s been used by all the kids in my family and it’s still rock solid.
“I wanted to make furniture for kids that looks great and can be passed on. It needs to excite and stimulate little imaginations and be safe and ethically made.”
Drawing inspiration from abstract animal shapes and organic curves, Small One furniture invites safe play for the young ones and will delight design-conscious parents.
And, easily meeting Mellimoomoo’s style and sustainability criteria, Chris makes every piece by hand from ethically-sourced high quality Scandinavian birch plywood harvested from sustainable, managed forests.
All Small One products are made to the same Australian and NZ standards as cots and highchairs, so safety is assured. When not in use the chairs nestle neatly under the table.
“I love the fact that we make original furniture that’s locally produced. But the best part is the reaction from people, especially small ones,” Chris says.
“We recommend the Small One range for two years and over, although my one-year- old daughter Ava loves to play on, and around, hers.”
Mellimoomoo will be keeping an eye on this fresh new design team as there are plans for more exciting Small One products including a more user-friendly baby-change table.
