Jannine Barron has always aimed high.

Until the birth of her first child, Nelson, more than nine years ago, Jannine travelled Australia as a teacher, human rights advocate and writer.

Nelson and his younger brother Harper, who was born two years later, changed all that.

The joy Nelson's birth gave his Byron Bay mother in 1998 was tainted by frustration at the seemingly infinite spread of plastic and disposable baby products.

For a woman with a strong commitment to building a better world for future generations, the contradiction in caring for children by using plastic nappies that then went into toxic landfill was intolerable.

Jannine already had form inventing baby products. She had just helped create the popular hug-a-bub baby carrier - now a successful company in its own right - and jumped at the chance to invent a new line of cloth nappies.

Jannine describes the passion for cloth nappies that grew in her as unexpected; and the result of that passion is a range of washable nappies light years beyond the terry-towelling squares favoured by our parents.

The invention of the new nappy and the formation of her company, Nature's Child, marked the start of a long road to success.

Today, Nature's Child is one of Australia's top baby product companies and the nation's leading light in providing natural and organic options for caring for children. Since inventing her nappy, Jannine has invented a range of other baby items including organic cotton breast pads, nappy wipes and face wipes and a range or organic and natural baby essentials.

Jannine has become one of the nation's top experts on cloth nappies, addressing conferences and contributing to parenting magazines on the subject.
